Our Company

Now in its
4th Generation

Ragolds than and now

The beginning
In 1887, German businessman Adolf Speck founded the „First Steam Confectionery Factory of Baden“. In 1899/90 he set up his first factory for high-quality sugar confectionery, especially sweets, with his own production of jam, marzipan and nougat for fillings.

The company was later transformed into a joint stock company.

In 1936, Karl Schindler took over the company’s shares. The company has been family-owned ever since.

In 1952 Karl Schindler died and his 23 year old son Jörg Schindler decided to take over the company. He made the company internationally famous with the brand names Atemgold, Gletschereis, Rachengold, Granini and the world’s first sugar-free sweet, Velamints. An expanded product range and own sales organisations in Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, South Africa and above all in the USA led the company to success.

The transition
In April 2005, it was announced that the company would close on 31 December 2005.

A series of reorganisation measures successfully reduced the losses, but did not fully compensate for them.

The aim of the closure scenario – as opposed to insolvency – was to meet all liabilities to banks and suppliers, as well as social obligations. This was fully achieved with the proceeds from the sale of trademarks, licences, production machinery and the maintenance of production until the end of 2005.

A new beginning
After the closure of the confectionery, Oliver Schindler, Jörg Schindler’s younger son, took over the name and production of the confectionery and rebuilt the company at a new location in Boizenburg.
